iPhone App – Bokeh

I downloaded my first application yesterday that is specifically for photography. It’s called Bokeh.

Basically, Bokeh does simple DOF calculations for you by showing you the amount of distance you have on each side of your focal point.

For instance, if I am shooting with my 5D and an 85mm lens at f:4 and I am 10 feet from my subject, my entire focal rang is just 8 inches from start to finish. Of course at the focal point it will be the sharpest, but when printed at a decent size of will still appear as sharp during that range.

There could be a number of uses for this. Just two I thought of off he top of it head were:

1. When panning or shooting a moving subject at long focal lengths, this tool would be great to help keep the probability to have a sharp photo high while managing the need for good exposure.

2. If you are shooting a particular size bug and want the entire bug in focus, you could use this tool to adjust your distance and aperature accordingly.

iphone app for wordpress

So against my better judgement I got an iphone. ;) well, ok, I didn’t really fight it. In fact, it was of my own doing.
For me it was not really the interface or the large touchscreen. Those are nice. It wasn’t the fact that it is an iPod or a thin and light phone either. You can get all these in other devices and in a lot of cases the iphone will get beat easily.
What made it a reality in my mind, is the app store. There are so many great applications out there for just about every thing you could think of.

My goal over the next few weeks is to find and report on great iPhone apps that will help you take better photos and share those pics with the rest of the world.

I just downloaded the app to wordpress and I am currently fighting the touch keyboard right now to write this. The app is easy, quick, and powerful. I will write more as I have more experience. .
